Old Vallauris, the city of ceramics
The Mediterranean capital of ceramics, where Picasso reinvented pottery in an old craftsmen's town its seaside neighbours completely overshadow.
Two thousand years of pottery tradition, sustained by local clay and the Aleppo pines that fuelled the kilns: Vallauris lived off utilitarian pottery long before Picasso settled here in 1948 and created nearly 4,000 ceramic pieces with the Ramiés at the Madoura workshop. Unlike Antibes or Cannes, the town remains a genuine craftsmen's town rather than a seaside destination — Avenue Georges Clemenceau still lines up workshop-boutiques where you can watch clay being thrown.
