Golfe-Juan
The seafront of Vallauris, where Napoleon landed to reconquer France in 1815 — an old fishing harbour and sandy beach completely overshadowed by the ceramic reputation of the perched town just above.
On 1 March 1815, the Emperor landed here with a thousand men after his escape from Elba, setting out on the route that would bear his name all the way to Grenoble. Today, Golfe-Juan remains a genuine little fishing harbour between Cannes and Antibes — sailboats moored gunwale to gunwale, fine sand rather than pebbles, and diving accessible straight off the jetty without needing a boat out to sea.
