Old Mougins
A spiral-shaped perched village between Cannes and Grasse, an artists' refuge in the 20th century — Picasso spent his last twelve years here — that has stayed clear of the Croisette crowds.
From the 1920s onward, Picabia, then Léger, Cocteau, Man Ray and finally Picasso settled in this village of concentric lanes inherited from its medieval defensive layout. Unlike a museum-village, Mougins is still inhabited by art: the density of galleries per square metre is unusual, without the tour coaches that swarm other perched villages of the Var. Plan to look up between façades covered in climbing plants and colourful shutters.
