Old Menton and its gardens
Between the Vieux-Château hilltop cemetery, the pastel lanes of the old town and the exotic gardens of Garavan, a concentrated dose of Menton far from the seafront crowds.
Built in 1807 on the ruins of the castle destroyed three years earlier, the Vieux-Château cemetery became, in the 19th century, the final resting place of a wealthy European clientele who came to Menton for the winter — domed Russian mausoleums sit alongside British and Polish graves across four terraces. Most visitors come for the 360° panorama, from Italy to Cap Martin, which remains largely unknown to those who stop at the Old Port below.
